Top 7 Haunted Places in the United States
HuffPo Blogger Kami Garcia has composed a list of the top 7 haunted places in the United States. You’ve probably heard of some from the ghost hunting shows, or maybe you’ve heard of a few from pop culture, but needless to say they will all make you wonder if there’s something to this whole haunting business.
The Devil’s Road and The Cult House
This one is definitely a local legend and the location is often misreported. One thing the stories all agree on is once you drive up Cossart Road you’ll notice that all the trees lining it bend away as if they are recoiling from something evil. Further up the road is where things get more intense as you will discover The Cult House. Supposedly one of the members of the DuPont family use to own this stone mansion and the rumors are anywhere from Satanists to inbred creatures were hid up there to be spirited away from the rest of the world. Here’s a video by an intrepid Youtuber who ventured out to report on The Devil’s Road.
Bell Witch Farm in Adams, Tennessee
You may have seen a movie about The Bell Witch or seen one of the Ghost Hunting shows, but did you know you could also tour the cave yourself? This haunting stands out from many others since it was witnessed by several people in the town. Poor John Bell and his family were supposedly tormented by the witch of Kate Batts, a neighbor that wanted revenge. This torture went on for years and was documented by multiple people. Did something really happen here or were all the witnesses just duped by a hoax? We may never know, but you can check out the location yourself if you want in Adams, Tennessee.
West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, West Virginia
This gothic style prison operated until 1995 and is now a tourist attraction and training facility. The prison became infamous due to its ranking on the Justice Department’s Top Ten Most Violent Correctional Facilities list. Ghost stories have been told about the place well before it closed. Many guards and inmates have reported seeing a shadow man while the prison was open. Here’s an episode of Ghost Hunters in which Jason and Grant investigate the prison:
Waverly Hills Sanitorium in Louisville, Kentucky
This tuberculosis hospital had 6000 insanity cases or deaths alone due to experimental treatments. Paranormal phenomena often reported are a little girl on the third floor who plays hide and seek with visitors and an old woman with bloody wrists screaming for help. Plans are in development for a 4-star hotel to cater to ghost hunters and regular visitors alike. Would you have the guts to stay a night in a place like this?
Fort Mifflin, Philadelphia, PA
The sightings around Fort Mifflin stretch out over decades and the investigations are numerous. This Fort held off the British so George Washington could make it to Valley Forge and has been in use all the way up to the 1960s. The list of the regular apparitions that show up in Fort Mifflin can be found here, however to name a couple, there is a screaming woman so loud that the police have been called and a tour guide in period clothing that has actually given tours to unsuspecting tourists only later to be found out that no tour guides were on duty.
